History of the Trench Shotgun

The phrase “trench gun” invokes the image of a very particular military-style weapon – a short-barrel pump action shotgun that the user can hold the trigger down while cycling the shotgun and once the action is returned to battery the shotgun fires.

In the final year of World War I, the United States armed its forces on the Western Front with Winchester 1897 pump shotguns, which were specifically used for the close quarters of trench warfare. In June 1918, at the Battle of Belleau Wood, the trench shotgun proved to be a brutal weapon that allowed American soldiers to literally mow down the advancing enemy troops.

Germany wasn’t happy, and issued a formal diplomatic protest against the shotgun’s use.
