FN 509’s Military Legacy

Subsequently, the FN Herstal FN 509 Midsize 9mm Pistol was born out of the US Army’s  XM17 Modular Handgun System competition.

Significantly, successful firearms designed or manufactured by FN include the Browning Hi-Power and Five-seven pistols, the FAL, FNC, F2000 and SCAR rifles, the P90 submachine gun, the M2 Browning, MAG and Minimi machine guns. Consequently, FN Herstal’s firearms are used by the militaries of over 100 countries.

While FN did not win the contract, they still turned the 509 into a commercial winner. Finally, fresh on the heels of the full-size version, FN released in 2019 a slightly smaller pistol (FN Herstal FN 509 Midsize).

FN Herstal Has a Long History of Making Iconic Pistols

The long history of the Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre (French for ‘National Factory of Weapons of War’), or FN, dates back to 1889, when it made  rifles for the Belgian government. Based in Herstal, Belgium, the company now known as FN Herstal is the largest exporter of military small arms in Europe.

Previously, back in the 1930’s, FN entered into a long-lasting relationship with John Browning, the well-known American firearms designer. Subsequently, Browning began development of the GP35 “High Power” pistol,  which became very well-known as the legendary Browning Hi-Power.
