The P226 was designed for entry into the XM9 Service Pistol Trials that were held by the US Army in 1984 on behalf of the US armed forces to find a replacement for the M1911A1 and 24 other makes of handgun in US military service. The U.S. Navy SEALs later chose to adopt the P226 as the P226 MK25 with special corrosion protection. SIG Sauer updated the P226 and several models as Legion Series handguns, which included upgrades that place the new pistols among the finest factory pistols the company has ever made. The P226 Legion pistol is hammer fired with an all-metal frames and includes significant factory upgrades – SIG’s X-Ray high-contrast Day/Night front sight with a tritium insert for shooting in total darkness, contoured beavertail, P-SAIT trigger, and a relieved portion that serves as a finger groove for the strong-side middle finger.
