‘Česká zbrojovka’ (CZ) translates to ‘Czech armory.’ CZ firearms production commenced in 1937 and focused on both military and civilian arms. Initially, CZ made aircraft machine guns, pistols and small-bore rifles, but during WWII Germany occupied the plant and forced it to produce and repair military arms. Later, the plant returned to military and civilian arm production. Later, in 1950, CZ reorganized into a separate state enterprise.

Subsequently, CZ’s parent group, Česká zbrojovka Group, or CZG, acquired a 100-percent stake in Colt’s Manufacturing Company in 2021.
